Comcast Celebrates South Florida Black History has won the NAMIC award for Best Digital Media Short Form! The short was up against some big competition like BET Networks Buppies, MTV’s Will.i.am Pea Pod Foundation, and MTV’s John Legend; Obama – Most American President.
The segments are available on Get Local OnDemand for free.
Learn how Overtown earned its name in Colored Town. Relive the days when celebrities and jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughn could be found in Miami in Social Scene. Hear the story of Miami beaches being desegregated in the Civil Rights episode. Discover the rich past of The Hampton House where Black musicians like Count Basie, Sammy Davis Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, and Miles Davis stayed while entertaining at the Fountainbleu or the Eden Roc. (You can watch them by going to Channel 1, Get Local, and then select Black History. )
We’re very proud of this accomplishment, but we’re even more proud of the wonderful people who participated like Enid Curtis Pinkney, Marvin Dunn, H.T. Smith, Thelma Anderson Gibson, Derek Davis of the Dillard House Museum, Joanne Hyppolite and Paul George of HistoryMiami, Gene Tinnie of Virginia Key Park Trust, and Dr. Dorothy Jenkins. Without their work and sharing of their experiences along with organizations and projects like The Black Archives and HistoryMiami, we wouldn’t have been able to produce this series.
